SIO 237A: Introduction to Ocean Optics

Topics include basic physics of light and interaction of light with matter, radiometry and photometry, inherent, apparent and hybrid optical properties, radiative transfer equation, optics of air-water interface, light absorption and scattering by seawater constituents, optics of marine particles, light fields within the ocean and leaving the ocean, optical instrumentation and measurement techniques.

SIO 237B: Ocean Color Remote Sensing

Topics include an overview of ocean color sensors and satellite missions, radiometry, inherent and apparent optical properties, radiative transfer equation, solar radiation and optical properties of the atmosphere, propagation of light across the sea surface and within the ocean, water-leaving radiance and remote-sensing reflectance, light absorption and scattering in the ocean, effects of various seawater constituents on ocean reflectance, ocean color algorithms and applications.

SIO 237C: Optical-Biological Interactions in the Ocean

2 Units, S/U only

A discussion class with an emphasis on the interaction of light with marine plankton. Topics include light absorption, fluorescence, and scattering by phytoplankton and effects of growth conditions on phytoplankton optical properties. Contemporary papers on these topics are discussed.

SIO 202B: Fundamentals of Wave Physics (Optics part)

4 Units, Letter Grading only

Topics include blackbody radiation and solar spectrum, wave/particle duality of electromagnetic radiation (EMR); Maxwell equations, Poynting vector, electromagnetic spectrum and origins of EMR; energy, frequency, wavelength, speed, and polarization of EMR; absorption, elastic scattering and inelastic radiative processes; radiometric quantities and theorems of radiometry; light fields within the ocean and leaving the ocean; inherent, apparent and hybrid optical properties of media; optically significant constituents of seawater and ocean optical properties; radiative transfer equation.
